Is the YouTube thumbs down button in the comment section useless?

I really don't think it does anything. When I thumbs up a comment, I can go back to that video and comment and see my thumbs up is still checked. When I thumbs down a comment, coming back to that video and comment it is not still checked. It does not save. It does not remove from the total of thumbs up like it used to. It's pretty much pointless now. And I have not seen a "hidden" comment in a long, long time.

It's not entirely useless. If a post gets significantly more thumbs downs than thumbs ups, it gets hidden by default so users don't see it unless they explicitly click on the "Comment hidden due to low rating" link to see it. However, I'm not sure of the details regarding what ratio (or combination of count and ratio) triggers the comment to be hidden, and I'm not at all certain that Yahoo would be willing to share that information publicly.

It really is useless, they just want to trick you into thinking it counts, when literally every comment just has thumbs up, no mater how hateful the comment is. Youtube is a piece of crud ever since merging with Google+.

There is a band I like that is getting a lot of hate on YouTube, some of the comments are nasty, so instead of responding to the trolls, I'll thumbs down their negative comments. However, it doesn't seem to be doing anything. For example, some of the bad comments have a few thumbs ups, but when I thumb them down, their thumbs up count stays the same. So does the YouTube thumbs down button in the comment section do anything? I'm I wasting my time clicking on this icon?
